Let’s take a look at the top 6 odds to win Super Bowl XLIX (according to Bet365) and who I think will win based on what I saw in week 6 of the 2014 NFL Season, this is something I will do each week during the season.
Team: current Bet365 odds – weekly result (season record)
Denver Broncos: 10/3- Won 31-17 at Jets. (4-1) The Broncos were victorious 31-17 at the Jets in a game that was somewhat closer than most expected. Running back Ronnie Hillman got the start in placed of the injured Montee Ball and rushed 24 times for 100 yards. Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas caught 10 balls for 124 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Julius Thomas had 4 receptions for 51 yards and 2 scores. Julius Thomas now has 9 touchdowns this season. The Denver defense intercepted Jets QB Geno Smith one time. They also recovered one Jets fumble. They were able to sack Smith 4 times in the game. The one negative for the Broncos in this game was the penalty flags as they were penalized 11 times for a loss of 101 yards. This week they play at home versus 4-2 San Francisco.
Seattle Seahawks: 5/1 – Lost 30-23 vs Cowboys. (3-2) The Seahawks suffered their 2nd loss of the season 30-23 versus the Cowboys and this one was more of an eye-opener because it was at home. It was only their 2nd home loss in the last 3 seasons. The team jumped out to a 10-0 lead but couldn’t sustain it as the Cowboys used a smash-mouth style to grab the victory. Quarterback Russell Wilson had a down day (for his standards) as he was 14 of 28 for 126 yards with no touchdowns and 1 interception. Wilson did rush for one touchdown. Running back Marshawn Lynch rushed 10 times for 61 yards. The normally stout Seahawks defense allowed Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray to rush for 115 yards and a score. The team only amassed a total of 206 yards in the game. They struggled with only 9 first downs compared to Dallas’ 23 first downs. This week they play at 1-4 St. Louis.
New England Patriots: 10/1 – Won 37-22 at Bills. (4-2) The Patriots grabbed their 2nd straight dominant victory as they climbed back atop the AFC East division. Quarterback Tom Brady excelled for the 2nd straight as he was 27 of 37 for 361 yards with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. He has now has 6 touchdowns with no interceptions combined the last 2 games. Wide receiver Brandon LaFell had 4 receptions for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tight end Rob Gronkowski caught 7 balls for 94 yards. The Patriots defense intercepted Bills QB Kyle Orton one time. They also recovered 2 Bills fumbles. The New England came up with 5 sacks. This week they play on Thursday night at home versus 1-5 NY Jets.
Green Bay Packers: 10/1 – Won 27-24 at Dolphins. (4-2) The Packers won their 3rd straight game as they rallied to beat the Dolphins 27-24. The winning score came with 3 seconds left as Quarterback Aaron Rodgers found receiver Andrew Quarless in the end zone. Rodgers was 24 of 42 for 264 yards with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed 7 times for 34 yards. Wide receiver Jordy Nelson had 9 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown. The Green Bay defense intercepted Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill 2 times. They also came up with 1 fumble recovery. This week they play at home versus 3-2-1 Carolina.
San Diego Chargers: 10/1 – Won 31-28 at Raiders. (5-1) The Chargers scored their 5th straight victory as they won narrowly 31-28 at Oakland. Quarterback Philip Rivers was 22 of 34 for 313 yards with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Running back Branden Oliver rushed 26 times for 101 yards and a score. Wide receiver Malcolm Floyd caught 5 balls for 103 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Antonio Gates caught his 6th touchdown of the season. The Chargers defense struggled a little bit as they allowed 396 total yards. This week they play at home versus 2-3 Kansas City.
San Francisco 49ers: 11/1 – Won 31-17 at Rams. (4-2) The 49ers were victorious for the 3rd week in a row as they beat the Rams 31-17. The team came back from an early 14-0 deficit. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick was 22 of 36 for 343 yards with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Receiver Anquan Boldin caught 7 balls for 94 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Lloyd had the key play of the game as he scored on an 80 yard touchdown catch right at the end of the 1st half to bring the Niners within 4 points. The San Francisco defense intercepted Rams QB Austin Davis 1 time. They also sacked Davis 5 times. This week they play at 4-1 Denver.
For the first time this season I’m not “as” confident about the Seahawks winning it all after seeing the Cowboys pretty much beat them at their own game. I’m going to change it up this week and say that I’m very impressed with the Chargers’ start to the season. if Philip Rivers continues to perform so well they could have a great shot to make the Super Bowl as the AFC representative. I also love their odds right now. For the time being the San Diego Chargers are the best bet to win Super Bowl XLIX at 10/1. (Bet365)
