The Kentucky Derby takes place in the USA this Saturday, May 4th. The race is setting up to be a great one this year with two clear favourites heading into the race, and plenty of horses considered contenders with morning line odds of 10-1 or better. It’s really anyone’s guess as to which horse will win on Saturday, which makes it all the more interesting from a betting perspective.
The morning line odds were released following the post position draw last Saturday evening, but I expect those odds to move significantly on race day with Fierceness (5-2) and Sierra Leone (3-1) as the two favourites according to the morning line, and Catching Freedom (8-1), Just a Touch (10-1), and Forever Young (10-1) the other top contenders.

My Pick
I will be betting on Fierceness on Saturday. He’s a proven winner that was the favourite at most sportsbooks before the morning line was released.
Fierceness is coming off a win in the Florida Derby where he posted an incredibly fast time of 1:48.22. He also won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November of 2023, which shows he’s been the fastest horse in this age group before and he’s only gotten faster. He’s a horse that finds a way to win, which is why I like him to come out on top in this big field on Saturday.

As you can see, Fierceness dominated the field in that race and I think he may be on another level compared to the other 3-year-olds at this years Derby.
